Ingredients

1 quart bourbon, blended whiskey, or brandy, warmed
1 lemon, thinly sliced, each slice stuck with 1 clove
2 1-inch pieces of cinnamon stick
2 quarts boiling water
Sugar syrup ( 1 cup sugar mixed with 1/3 cup water, boiled for 5 minutes and cooled)
Garnish: slices of lemon

Preparation

  1. Step 1

    In a heat-proof punchbowl, combine bourbon, blended whiskey, or brandy, warmed, with clove-studded lemon slices, cinnamon sticks, and 2 quarts boiling water. Add sugar syrup (1 cup sugar mixed with 1/3 cup water, boiled for 5 minutes and cooled) to taste and divide the toddy among twelve 10-ounce heat-proof mugs, rinsed first with boiling water.

    Step 2

    Garnish each drink with a slice of lemon.
